Inspired by the obscured photographs resulting from camera problems during a trip to New Mexico, Remanence's Brian McWilliams embarks on his first solo outing. Drawing a parallel with the photographic mishap, "tumbleweed obfuscated by camera failure" questions the role that control and surrender play in the unfolding of the creative process. Musically, the album explores the meeting point between harshness and light; wandering the boarderland between bleak, stark beauty and melodic serenity. Packaged in a DVD case, the album features striking organic artwork and includes a printed velum envelope containing original photos from the New Mexico trip that inspired the release. Mastered by James Johnson at Zero Music and Brian McWilliams at The Sound Observatory.
"An overall organic sounding piece of art, full of morphing atmosphere and textures... This is music which must be felt." Bert Strolenberg, KLEM Magazine
"From a technical standpoint, the album is textbook perfect. From an artistic standpoint, the CD is an amazing and rewarding journey." Bill Benkelman, Wind and Wire
"An amazing and imaginative musical project, not quite like any other album in recent memory." Steve Davis, Associate Producer, Hearts of Space Radio
"The disc sounds great... The packaging is top-notch... The pictures are great, the design is excellent, and so, so clean..." Matt Borghi, Customer Review
"The packaging is superb... All the components just work right for me, from the images, photos and texts themselves, to the translucent envelope and typography - it is all harmonious... I really liked the fact that you provided actual photographic prints in the envelope." Bernie Maier, Customer Review
"...a real "alone, at night-time" CD. Not only is it beautifully presented, but it rewards the listener well. Sometimes brooding, sometimes sinister, sometimes melancholy, sometimes mysterious. A lot of the time it makes me imagine landscapes with which I am unfamiliar, but of which the music gives me a sense. There are spaces in the music which breed thought. There is much lonely beauty." Combining and mixing a fresh blend of fractal groove textures and subtle rhythmic architecture steeped in glowing atmospherics, Book of Mutations, utilizes an array of acoustic and electronic percussion, drum machine, computer and synthesizer from work that's been continually evolving since Vir Unis, collaborative work with Steve Roach, Saul Stokes, James Johnson, Ma Ja Le, and three solo albums. Continuing in the spirit of the man/machine symbiotic relationship, Book of Mutations weaves a landscape of organic-electro hybrid grooves, steady-state streams, and deep spaces, always mutating and evolving, crossfading and fractalizing, to create a myriad of new forms....
In addition to the audio disc will be a companion cd-rom containing many high quality images of digital paintings and designs by Vir Unis drawn from the past 5 years while working and listening to the flow of the music. DOWNLOAD VERSION NOW AVAILABLE, SPECIAL EXTRA ARTWORK INCLUDED....
"Book of Mutations comes with a “bonus” cd-rom full of computer art that you can set up to watch as a slideshow while listening to the music. The combination is very compelling to this reviewer and strongly indicates the direction that
“tribal-ambient” electronic music should take.
Unis, who has recorded with Steve Roach, James Johnson, and many others, expresses a style on this recording that sounds a bit like a cross between the “composed” sounding works of Robert Rich ( e.g. 7 Veils) and the soundworlds of Roach. Anyone who enjoys these artists should get this recording, which I enjoyed very much. This is exploratory music, not dreamy ambient. Inner states are being explored in all their glorious ambiguity.
Unis contributes plenty of his own style to create a very enjoyable listening experience. Most of the pieces are short, and feature some very good-sounding “tribal percussion”, some of which may be samples and some of which may be
“played”. Unis mananges to make the percussion sound completely natural, as though there is a phalanx of human percussionists in the room with him.
“Aleph” begins with stately and mysterious opening chords played on an orchestral sounding synth. It sounds like a prelude to the recording, at least until the percussion enters. Then the characteristic tribal percussion procession begins, played over a series of drones. The pieces warps into ‘Metatron’s Cube”, which begins with compelling synth effects and a very spacey drone . The mood portrayed is one of anticipation. As the drones begin to modulate, “Crossing the Photon Sphere”, a striking piece, begins what sounds like a “mystic chord” sequence which repeats throughout the song. This is combined with extremely fitful and busy percussion to nice effect. Although static, this piece was one of the more impressive ones. “Somewhere Along The Polar Axis” features treated percussion, sonic effects and fluty-sounding pads.
“The Ascension Process” changes the pace at just the right time by going to Unis’ trademarked “fractal grooves”
(a groove contained within a percussion loop as far as I understand it) and his distorted guitar ( or distorted guitar synth sound) . The atmosphere is preserved but the pace intensifies over the next several pieces until “Where Does Memory Go”, which presents a new variation on the descending-second chord progression heard in much ambient music. This piece sounds more thematic than impressionistic and manages to sound beautiful and mournful at the same time. Unis uses a clear electric guitar and one that is distorted at the same time for some nice expression. Another standout track. The recording closes as it started in “All Eyes on the Timestar’ with distant drones and percussion.
The exploratory nature of this release, the variety with which it is presented, and the demonstration of how effective this music is when combined with other media all make this one of the most compelling “Tribal Ambient” releases of last year. More, please." Mark Morton, Ambient Visions

Originally released on AtmoWorks, back in 2004, Easting was a live recording to digital tape at 20-bit. No further editing has been done to the file. This recording is live work in the studio between these two individuals, as was often case in their collaborations.
The 2009 edition is a 24 bit remaster of the original recording, which in the course of the mastering process was transferred from digital tape via s/pdif, so this is an audiophile's version akin to a director's cut for film. Easting was a very spontaneous recording between Vir Unis and James Johnson. Recorded at Vir's bubble studio, this longform piece was recorded in one take on a Saturday afternoon in 2004. The remastered version has true wide stereo processing so the results, though true to the form and spirit of the original recording, have been quite dramatic. New artwork for the remastered Easting by Vir Unis. AtmoWorks is now offering select albums in FLAC format in 24 bit as well as 320k MP3. Disc 1 of the two disc set features live recordings by James Johnson & Vir Unis from various performances in 2003 & 2004. Concerts in Chicago and Philadelphia blend in collage form for disc 1. A great continuation of live recordings by these two artists following the critically acclaimed cd, Live Transmissions Vol. 1. If you like the Perimeter series from these two, be sure to pick up a copy of this latest offering.
"Cool grooves, glitches and beats adorn Live Transmissions 2, Disc 1, picking right up where Live Transmissions 1 left off, not to mention the five discs in the Perimeter series. This is active, contagious stuff....It is intelligent, forward-looking EM" Phil Derby, Electroambient Space
"Following the single disc volume of "The Live
Transmissions Volume I" is the exquisite double disc
set "Live Transmissions 2" tracing the realtime
recording sessions of Atmoworks labelhead James
Johnson in collaboration with longtime musical partner
Vir Unis. Picking up where they left off in volume
one, the first disc revisits some of the more
technical and sci-fi influenced moods and spaces of
the original installment. The recording covers
several live performances including a
standing-room-only show in a dark Chicago lounge as
well as a key moments from a Stars End Radio session
back in 2003. Revealing some subtle influences from
techno and perhaps even breakbeat percussive
structures, disc one charts a darker and perhaps more
synthetic style than disc two of this 2CD set. I was
pleasantly surprised with the more involved
beat-oriented passages here, with intricate rhythmic
programming sitting nicely alongside enveloping drones
and lush beds of melodic synthesis. Also, with 4
tracks over 10 minutes in duration, (2 of them around
20 minutes), the full adventure clocks in at nearly 80
minutes, plenty of time to stretch out in this
fantastic sonic voyage." phonaut, WNUR89.3fm wnur.org

Disc 2 is a complete recording from a concert taped at the Samovar Tea Lounge in San Francisco. A great continuation of live recordings by these two artists following the critically acclaimed cd, Live Transmissions Vol. 1. If you like the Perimeter series from these two, be sure to pick up a copy of this latest offering.
"Whereas disc one looks toward the stars, disc two
explores a decidedly more organic and terrestrial
soundworld. Recorded in San Francisco's Samovar Tea
Lounge, disc two contains a delicious blend of fluid
sound systems. It starts off with a beautiful 20
minute opening track which gently morphs from sunrise
beatless ambience to more rhythmically concerned
structures near the middle, and back again in time for
the start of track two. Track three is a fantastic
exposition into classic floating ambient soundscape
work. As it is pleasantly reminiscent of another
piece I'm quite fond of, Woob's "Odonna" from the
landmark Woob1194 release on em:t, I immediately
warmed up to this one. Complete with a layer of
velvety radio interference in the background and
segments of a discussion about recording music and the
psychology of performing in front of an audience, the
music itself carries you along through an enchanting
melodic ecosystem. Classical elements surface in the
form of an ethereal violin infusion, reminding me of
my favorite moments from Johnson's groundbreaking
"Butterfly Chamber" release.
As I tend to favor their more spacey and
'computerized' work, I was surprised to see myself
coming back to disc 2 more often. Both discs are
strong works in themselves, and this album is more
like getting 2 albums bundled together, being quite
different from each other and with separate artwork.
In addition, these sessions are captured as unedited
excerpts, meaning no post-production work or overdubs,
offering a detailed look into the inner workings of
two brilliant collaborators as they spontaneously
create these pieces. Highly recommended!" phonaut, WNUR89.3fm wnur.org

Traveling along the esoteric edge of electronic music, Perimeter II is a timely evocation of the electronic-cybernetic world which is so much a part of our lives. "...a celebration of technology and modern sound-processing and outright 'computer music.' It abounds in special sound-effects, looping sequences, and 'fractal' contours. Perimeter II gives the listener a glowing screen-window into what the twenty-first century might hold for us in artistic expression..." Hannah M.G. Shapero, EER-MUSIC.com
"...there exists a remarkable sense of inventive composition, producing music that is at the same time likably engaging and dreamily torpid... Unis and Johnson are indeed maestros of this peculiar genre, actualizing the realm at the edge of slumber and transforming those blurry notions into engaging themes with their subtle rhythmic strategies." Matt Howarth, Sonic Curiosity
"As good as the first set was, this 3-CDR set, attractively packaged in a multi-DVD case, tops it on all levels. The grooves are cooler, and well, there's just more of it... It's hard to pick out high points, there are so many... Just go with the groove on discs one and two, and go with the flow on disc three. Come back feeling refreshed. Perimeter II is fantastic." Phil Derby, Electroambient Space
"...three CDs of alternatingly simple and complex vibrating systems of electronic music... Vir Unis and James Johnson are musicians exploring the area between and beyond the spiritual and corporeal. These concepts of time and perception come through in the spectacular simplicity and beauty of their music." Chuck van Zyl, STAR'S END

The Perimeter series has always been about tactile music created in the moment through the man/machine interface of past and current music making technologies. Perimeter III is no exception, as both new and old technolgies were connected together through an intricate web of audio, midi & software, to create the next chapter in the Perimeter series. Recorded at 24bit and mastered to the wonderous silky sound of analog tape. Perimeter III's sound is a delicately sparse 3 dimensional world filled with clock divided rhythims, open ambience and live sample manipulation. DOWNLOAD THE ARTWORK FILES DIRECTLY HERE
"Organic meets hi tech in a kaleidoscopic stew of eastern mysticism and precise and tight skeleton grooves overlaying a bed of heavy infrabass and alien frequencies. I like how the harmonic pads are being kept to a minimal presence on this one, just haunting the deep ambience of the tracks. In general, it feels a lot more sparse than the other "Perimeter" Cds. Got to love those cool shorter and warm interlude-like tracks too...Like to hear more of these too...Maybe in a future release...
The sound is noticeably warmer and clearer i guess due to the new mastering technique on analog tape.
Well, all together "Perimeter 3"is a captivating and refreshing experience." Tony Milon, Customer Review

"...Ambient tonalities hang in the air like gaseous serpents, undulating with languid motions and maintaining an ethereal foundation... Tempos and structures evolve throughout the tracks, producing lively patterns that become engaging in their soft definition... This music displays remarkable melodic qualities, establishing tuneage that is haunting and contemplative, but with a tasty oomph that energizes in a subtle manner." Matt Howarth, Sonic Curiosities
"It's fantastic !!!. How do you manage to control your equipment so perfectly in live sessions? I mean it's rare to hear such a level of free expression in electronic sound in a live setting. Everything flows like water as if the machines had a life of their own. I had the same feeling with the "Bonsai" cd . I am really hooked on your music and find it difficult to find the same level of vision in other electronic music, especially the classy "Fractal grooves".
