Max Corbacho
Ars Lucis (MP3 Download)
Mere words cannot describe the excitement with which we welcome our latest addition to AtmoWorks, Max Corbacho. For many of us here, Max's music has been an integral part of our ambient rotation for many years. His albums move like glaciers, pulse like a beating heart and have been among some the most consistently excellent music in the genre. His latest album, "Ars Lucis" is no exception, and we are thrilled to offer it here in digital format for the first time.
From the artists' website:
"Like a weightless dream, the main theme is exposed in Light-Matrix Portal, where a gentle swirl of chords leads us, as a Gothic doorway, into a magnificent space. The main theme remains on all the pieces in a subtle way, spreading mystical, delicate scents through labyrinthine passages ascending and spiraling to the vaults. Max presents the album’s flow through different sonic zones sequentially, as if we proceed on a walking meditation through a 13th century cathedral."
To consider "Ars Lucis" as merely a sequence of songs is to do it a great injustice. This is one of those rare albums where the whole is so much more than the sum of its parts. Each song is a chapter in an 80-minute story that transports the listener through the spiritual awakening that often accompanies the great holy places of the world. Max's fine touch and deep affinity for progression and variation are on display at the highest level. Simply put, "Ars Lucis" sings.
This digital release contains an added bonus track, "Beyond Vaults" which could not be included in the CD release last year due to time constraints. Max Corbacho and AtmoWorks are proud to offer this extended edition of "Ars Lucis" to the general public for the first time.
We here at AtmoWorks couldn't be more thrilled to have Max join our family of artists, and we look forward to many years of wondrous music to come.

Mark Tamea
Metonymy (MP3 Download)
AtmoWorks kicks off 2010 with the latest release from long-time friend and recording artist Mark Tamea. Mark's latest work - "Metonymy" hits our shelves today and is a worth successor to 2008's "Tessellation" and is his third release with AtmoWorks since the re-launch of the label in 2007. When asked about his latest work, Mark responded:
"Out there beyond the surface of the curvature I can hear you all shuffling around. By use of this audible evidence I have concluded that the periphery above me is indeed concave. I have developed a knack for gauging refractive noise. I assume that you are aware of Plato's Cave? Those sounds are - to me - a precise metaphor for the shadows cast before the riveted prisoners, except in my case I am not chained to a wall but merely bridled to remain here beneath the great dome."
You can read more of Mark's thoughts on the new release here.
In musical terms, "Metonymy" is simply brilliant. Mark's kaleidoscopic compositional style and deft use of silence and suspension are in full force, the music pulling the listener along on a slowly evolving journey. Instrumentation is wide and varied, from found sounds and static drones, to plucked strings, percussion and bells. For fans of Mark's earlier work, "Metonymy" is a tour de force, while still providing an accessible entry point to his work for the novice listener.
AtmoWorks is thrilled to welcome Mark Tamea back, and equally excited to start 2010 with "Metonymy".

LIMITED EDITION CDRS, AUTOGRAPHED AND HAND-NUMBERED, ARE AVAILABLE DIRECTLY FROM THE ARTIST.

As 2009 draws ever closer to its ultimate end, AtmoWorks is proud to bring you the rebirth of Vir Unis' "The Drift Inside".
Originally released in 1999, The Drift Inside can tangibly be considered as the birthing point of what would later become AtmoWorks. As the first solo release by soon-to-be industry laureate Vir Unis, the album broke new ground in the ambient genre and established the artist as "one man" - and one to be reckoned with. Chuck van Zyl of Star's End Radio reviewed the original release 10 years ago, and said that the album "invites contemplation and introspection, creating a sonic environment that is comfortable and transportive. 'Drift' progresses in a nearly imperceptible linear fashion, the listener only faintly aware of being led."
The anniversary edition breathes new life into this ambient classic, remastered at full 24-bit resolution and released in MP3 and lossless FLAC formats. It also features brilliant new original artwork by renowned ambient musician and visual artist Steve Brand, whose visual lyricism has graced many of AtmoWorks' releases this past year.
For the artist, The Drift Inside "is a document for [the] journey of self discovery and personal reflection. It's what has also been called 'private music' in the past and, to be honest, I actually feel more comfortable with that term than 'ambient music', which I feel has been so overused for marketing purposes and doesn't really accurately describe what most 'ambient' artists produce."
We're thrilled to bring you this remarkable rebirth of a classic Vir Unis release!

Testphasen negativ
Hostia (MP3 Download)
As part of our ongoing mission to bring you the best new ambient/electronic music from around the globe, AtmoWorks is embarking on a program of digital distribution with new and established artists who have released CDs either on their own or through another label. By doing so, we hope to play some small part in driving additional listeners towards these very deserving artists, the first of which we're thrilled to have on board.
Testphasen negativ (aka Ralf Rabendorn) has already made a name for himself in the ambient music arena with earlier releases "How I Won the War" and "Burn, Giant Burn!". With his new release, "Hostia" Ralf has delivered a lyrical lesson on the human psyche, though one he insists each listener must learn for themselves.
"I rarely write about my own music. If I give a certain direction, then people will always have this direction in their head. Each individual has made [their] own experiences, therefore the impact of the sounds and songs to each individual is different."
We're thrilled to welcome Testphasen negativ to the AtmoVerse, and look forward to many more releases to come!

Dan Pound
The Fourth Way (MP3 Download)
AtmoWorks is excited to bring you the latest addition to our ever-expanding pool of artists, Dan Pound and his inaugural AW release "The Fourth Way". Dan described the music, and the process by which he created it.
"This music is a series of layered themes dedicated to the many ways
towards enlightenment and spiritual advancement, in particular, a
practice called the Fourth Way. This theme is based on the literary,
philosophical teachings and body of work by the same title by Greek
and Russian Philosophers G.Gurdgieff & P.D.Ouspensky developed during
the early and middle 20'th century.
As usual in my music, I use a combination of electronic and organic
instruments, as well as shamanic musical structures and elements to
create a deeply layered aural space of timelessness, and to induce an
inner exploration into our deepest, darkest depths. Be ready to be
transported."
The music on this release is moving, despite the often-times stationary feeling it imparts. This is music that challenges as it soothes, and drives you towards conclusions even as it allows for a weightless drift. We're absolutely thrilled to welcome Dan to the AtmoWorks family, and just as excited to bring you "The Fourth Way".

Vir Unis & James Johnson
Easting Remastered (320k MP3)
THIS IS NOT THE FLAC VERSION. PLEASE ENTER THE WORD "EASTING" IN THE SEARCH FIELD TO THE LEFT TO FIND THE FLAC DOWNLOAD

Originally released on AtmoWorks, back in 2004, Easting was a live recording to digital tape at 20-bit. No further editing has been done to the file. This recording is live work in the studio between these two individuals, as was often case in their collaborations.
The 2009 edition is a 24 bit remaster of the original recording, which in the course of the mastering process was transferred from digital tape via s/pdif, so this is an audiophile's version akin to a director's cut for film.
Easting was a very spontaneous recording between Vir Unis and James Johnson. Recorded at Vir's bubble studio, this longform piece was recorded in one take on a Saturday afternoon in 2004. The remastered version has true wide stereo processing so the results, though true to the form and spirit of the original recording, have been quite dramatic. New artwork for the remastered Easting by Vir Unis.
AtmoWorks is now offering select albums in FLAC format in 24 bit as well as 320k MP3.
From the 2004 original album info :
"In a single long form track, James Johnson & Vir Unis mix together their sonic palettes to create a deeply earth centered atmospheric work filled with ambient subtlety and earthen organic textures. Fans of both artists' more minimal drift works will no doubt enjoy this release, as it slowly surrounds the listener with it's deep atmospherics."

mara's torment
dexterity (MP3 Download)
We're thrilled to welcome mara's torment back for their second release with AtmoWorks in 2009, "dexterity". Following up on the ten-year anniversary release of "across for show", Rik Maclean (mara's torment) returns with "dexterity", a five-song EP of brand new material. Rik had this to say about the release.
"On 'dexterity', the second release by mara's torment on the AtmoWorks label, rik maclean presents a new collection of songs inspired by decay, deterioration, and how we respond emotionally to these changes. Where previous music by mara's torment has explored the creation of atmosphere and space, "dexterity" explores the passing of time, music that studies the progressive decline of shapes and forms, and how we handle that decline."
Analog sweeps, gently pulsing drones and subtle variations of texture, balance and pitch weave through this 38 minute, 5 song set. Fans of Rik's earlier works are sure to enjoy this latest release and "dexterity" presents an ideal entry point into Rik's body of work for those who might not have made his acquaintance. We're thrilled Rik is back on AtmoWorks, and are proud to present "dexterity".
