In 2001, with Vir Unis, James Johnson created AtmoWorks.com, an online catalog for the works of like-minded ambient and electronic artists. It has been met with great success and continues to grow with the ever-expanding technologies made available for consumers. AtmoWorks.com has created a fluid outlet that allows listeners the opportunity to sample the works of its artists without the high cost attached to traditional delivery methods.

Vir Unis

Vir Unis has been creating electronic and psychoactive ambient music now for nearly two decades. His diverse pallete of sonic textures creates a unique space in which purely atmospheric and beatless albums like The Drift Inside and Aeonian Glow sit side by side with albums like Pulse n Atmo, Mercury & Plastic, and Book of Mutations that display a more beat driven environment still steeped in the glow of atmosphere and deep space.

Using a variety of textural sources, from organic field recordings on one end to pure computer sound abstraction on the other, Vir Unis slices, dices, mixes, and chops these raw textures into a highly refined fractalized blend of audio food for the mind and body. He has also worked with a variety of well respected musicians in the field, such as Steve Roach, Saul Stokes, Christopher Short, Interstitial, and James Johnson.

Searching for a pure, direct way to communicate with like minded listeners, Vir Unis formed AtmoWorks in the Winter of 2001 with James Johnson as a means to faciliate the increasing amount of work coming out of the studio. In the Spring of 2004, he and James co-founded AtmoStreams, an internet radio streaming center for AtmoWorks Music. AtmoStreams is unique in that it provides an intimate setting in which artists from around the globe can stream live music directly from their studios. In this era of independent music, AtmoStreams provides a path for artists to communicate directly with listeners like never before.

Noah Jurcin

Phonaut has been DJing and experimenting with his own productions in the Chicago area for well over a decade. Starting with occasional gigs spinning in various lounges and clubs around the city, he then began broadcasting his own late-night transmissions on WNUR's Streetbeat program. For over 7 years his radio show provided exposure for more obscure downtempo and ambient artists not normally heard on the airwaves. As booking manager and venue scout for Atmoworks in the Chicago area, he also helps maintain the AtmoStreams online station. He is currently studying sound art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Head over to http://www.phonaut.com/ to read about his latest activities.
